Loch Ness Highlights Tour

This tour starts and ends in Inverness and circumnavigates the loch taking in the main places of interest including:

01 Wellington Layby

There is a memorial here to commemorate the loss of airmen when their Wellington Bomber crashed here during a storm on New Years Eve 1940. The Wellington was discovered by divers and raised from the loch in 1985, it is now preserved in a museum in England.

02 Urquhart Castle

Invaded time after time throughout history and the scene of many bloody battles this iconic castle tells a rich story.
From St Columba to Macdonald Lord of the Isles and the Jacobites this castle has been visited by everyone from Saints to Lords to Armies over the centuries.

03 John Cobb Memorial
John Cobb died here trying to achieve the water speed record in 1952. His boat The Crusader reached 206mph when it hit an unexplained wave and disintegrated.

04 Fort Augustus

This village lying at the southern end of Loch Ness was named after Prince William Augustus who later became the Duke of Cumberland. Today very little remains of the Fort although parts of it were incorporated into the Benadictine Abbey built in 1876. Fort Augustus is on the banks of the Caledonian Canal which was built by the famous engineer Thomas Telford.
Fort Augustus is home to the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre.

05 Suidhe Viewpoint

After a steep climb and passing the picturesque Loch Tarff you will come to Suidhe Viewpoint, meaning seat in Gaelic this viewpoint is situated 1200ft above sea level. On a clear day you can see seven different lochs from here.

06   General Wades

Bridge

Built by his men in 1732 at Whitebridge this bridge is the finest surviving example of a single span General Wade Bridge. It roughly follows the line of the old Wade road to the village of Foyers.

07 Falls of Foyers

Romanticised by Rabbie Burns in 1787 the falls generated the first hydro electric power in Britain in 1896. The falls can be accessed by a fairly steep walk which has many steps, unfortunately this walk is not recommended for the less mobile.

08 Dores Beach

Dores Beach at the northern shore of the loch has amazing views south and there’s also a chance for Nessie spotting!
